911 Days magazine

OS SuperLock LSD was featured in the recent issue of Japanese Porsche magazine called "911 DAYS"
FYI, the Porsche LSD is one of the best selling / the fastest moving items in our current product line up. new

911days1

The article is 4 pages long with detailed information and evaluation of the SuperLock LSD, and its test result where they have tested the LSD with their 996 GT2 model.
Go to the nearest bookstore to find your copy (if that's even possible), coldsweats02 or find a copy on-line (if you do read Japanese). coldsweats01

911days2

911days3

The article gave a great review about our LSD, and also mentioning their initial impression right after installing the LSD, which they thought they have mistakenly installed an open diff. 'cause the vehicle showed no sign of the LSD in work.
This is simply due to one of the characteristics of the SuperLock LSD where it possesses smooth transition from completely open differential to a fully-locked. good

For the same reason, many of the first time users of our LSD's have contacted us to let us know that our LSD's are not functioning correctly. (during break-in...)
All we needed to tell them  was to "step on it," and that's all it takes to solve the problem.smile

The SuperLock LSD was designed to instantly reacts and transitions smoothly from both free and locked positions, thus combining advantages of a normal differential's drivability and a race limited slip differential's performance and stability.  In another word, it works as an open differential to provide a vibration and noise-free ride, at the same time, provides 100% lock exactly when you need it. scissors

Brake calipers and rotors from ENDLESS

Generous people at ENDLESS have sent us an additional special gift for OS-86! present

003

It's a brand new Monoblock caliper / E-Slit roter set. new

They have been a great help for building OS-86, and the list of their generous donations is keep getting longer...

We might as well name it OS-ENDLESS-86. bleah

018

Without further ado, let's install this bad boy. wrench

009

A decently sized OE brake kit came with stock FT-86...

055

But there is no comperison to the presence of ENDLESS kit.  They are in a different league in terms of its appearance and performance. good

061

It looks like no driving condition will break this caliper... danger

The installation went smoothly without any complication and rather quickly as well.

Both front and rear brakes has been replaced / upgraded:

---Product info from ENDLESS website ---

E-Slit rotor:

"Endless racing rotors are available to suit the most abusive of racing conditions in the motorsports world. The rotors are made from specially heat treated carbon steel, and are lightweight also. They use the “E-Slit” vane technology to offer the most well balanced performance based on the choice of brake pad. They also run very cool compared to our competitors.

The E-Slit rotor is comprised of the narrow curved slit incorporated   with 4 smaller E-Slits. The smoother shaving of the pad by the long   curved slit and the increased friction provided by the E-Slits maintain   optimal brake pad condition at all times.

The rotor material is   comprised of a special carbon blend, an Endless original technology,   facilitating stable mu-levels, decreasing heat cracks and extracting   100% of the brake pads performance. Slits are designed for optimal   shaving.

The bell housing material is a rigid, lightweight, high-strength   aluminum alloy metal capable of withstanding high temperatures. It also   decreases unsprung weight, which contributes to stable braking."

Monoblock caliper:

"Four years in the making and after extensive testing  in race conditions, Endless has finally produced this caliper to achieve  their extremely high rigidity and lightness standards. The difficult  and complex manufacturing of the piston cylinders has been achieved  through highly advanced engineering. The body is made with only the  strongest aluminum material. This is the highest performance achievable  using the highest production technology and highest quality of  materials."

1st stage of mods complete

We have just finished the first stage of upgrading our OS86 test car. (Don't get confused with OS-88 sequential transmission...)

OS86 is currently armed with OS SuperLock LSD, OS Grand Touring performance clutch, ZEAL suspension kit / brake pads from ENDLESS, and a body kit from MODELLISTA. motorsports

These upgrades already made a significant difference in its performance, but still something to be desired... wrench

MORE POWER and better grip!  ...but, that could wait for awhile. happy01

Now is time to do more cosmetic upgrades(?):

001_2

OS86 is a test car and not a promotional car, so we wanted to keep its look as simple as possible.

We do have a variety of OS Giken stickers including some eye-catchy ones, but decided to stick with something subtle.

006

Hmmm, it feels like we are forgetting something. (later found that there was no sticker for the clutch)sweat02

This has nothing to do with OS86, but Izmon yet again found a clutch assy. just sitting on Clutch-wizard's work table:

008

It's a twin plate Street Master (AKA Grand Touring), and didn't look anything out of the ordinary.

But when you take a closer look: eye

009

It's Street Master Carbon sign03

One of our dealers is testing the clutch for us, and once the test is complete, we will be moving on to its production.

Crossing our fingers for a good test result. good

022

Come to think of it, we should try using the carbon disk on OS-86 clutch...

Let's go bother Clutch-wizard about it. catface

86 Clutch complete

There was this clutch assy. just sitting on the table where Clutch-wizard (CW) works his magic. danger

As you can see, there was no printing on its cover...

862_008

All of our products built for order should have OS Giken logo printed, which means this one must be a new clutch in development sign01

862_005

As usual, Izmon trapped CW and began his interrogation... think

Izmon: "What is this clutch for?"

CW: "For our FT86 / FR-S"

Izmon: "Weren't you just measuring the OE clutch a couple of days agosign02"

CW: "I already had some measurements to work with so just needed to confirm the info I received with our vehicle."

Izmon: "So is the development finished now?"

CW: "Almost, I need to adjust  the release sleeve and we will be ready to test it with our 86.  The test should give me enough data to decide the flywheel weight for an optimum inertial effect.  For now I have made two flywheels for the test: Light and Ultra-light"

Here are some pics comparing the OS and OE clutch:

862_017

862_013

862_027

After adjusting the release sleeve, it is time to install. smile

CW informed us that the clutch kit is currently called Grand Touring RE single-plate. flair

He didn't give us any more info besides its name for now... crying

Here's the installation scene:

862_054

Apply proper torque to tightening the flywheel bolts.

Then install the disk and cover.  It is best to use a clutch centering tool to have the disk centered correctly.

862_070

Izmon is pretending to help so he could have his picture taken... sweat02

862_064

All of us are interested in this new clutch so many of us have taken it for a spin. car dash

864_008

Clutch pedal felt a bit heavier with OS Clutch installed, but that is because the OE clutch pedal had such a light pedal feel to begin with.  Besides that, everything else was what you could expect from OS clutch products. good

Thanks to the reduced inertia, the engine response and engine brake were certainly improved.

864_011

There was just one person not entirely satisfied with its result... Clutch-wizard. shock

He felt a slight vibration out side of the engine's peak power range, and wishes to make an improvement.
We just hope he remembers that the clutch is using a light-weight flywheel...

Anyhow, the clutch should be available in no time. (as long as he doesn't find anything else to improve)

Reserve yours now happy01

86 Clutch development

We are making some progress with the 86 clutch development scissors

Mr. RS has taken down its transmission to locate an OE clutch kit:

86_002

Here's the OE clutch, and it is like a new... well, it is new.sweat02

86_036

Here's the housing, and still very clean as well.shine

86_007

Although our FT86 is from Toyota, its drive-train parts remind us of Subaru vehicles.

Anyhow, now that the transmission is out of the way, it's time for Clutch-wizard to work his magic. thunder

86_027

First step is to remove the clutch cover:

86_078_2

Then to remove the flywheel:

86_093

The current trend for a clutch assy. is to use a dual-mass flywheel and a light-weight disk set...

However, FT86 OE clutch assy. uses a single-mass flywheel and a spring dampened disk set.

86_118

When we removed the flywheel, we found this metal plate placed between the flywheel and the crank. eye

With further inspection, we also found a sensor (position/speed sensor?) attached to it.

86_119

We normally see the sensor attached to a flywheel itself, but this separate sensor will make the development a bit easier since we don't need to do anything special to our flywheel besides making it lighe-weight.

Big-boss himself was also at the scene to help out the development:

86_041

It is nice to work on a brand new car since the car is so clean and no rusty parts to deal with. bleah

We found Clutch-wizard was having a staring contest with the OE clutch... coldsweats02

86_141

Time to do some measurements.

86_164

While the car was up on the lift, we have installed a suspension kit from ENDLESS. good

86_024

We cannot wait to see how the new suspension set-up will work with our LSD.

But for now, we have to wait till the clutch development is complete... we cannot drive the car without the clutch and transmission in place. shock

Test for 86 LSD

Mr. RS and Tommy had a chance to take our OS Giken LSD equipped 86 to a much bigger circuit for a LSD test.

This time around, they have booked a spot at Okayama international circuit famous for Super GT championship race. good

1

They went on a week day, so when they got to the circuit, it was just them like a renting a whole track to themselves. happy01

2

Right until they were ready to go for a spin that is...sweat01

3

One after another started to show up, and they all were from out side of our prefecture and equipped for some sort of product testing.  Well, kinda' like us but in much larger scale with pit crews and digital equipments. wobbly

4

The LSD test went well... but the stock tires and suspension setup leaved much to be desired for the track use. think

For the next test with our clutch kit, we will try replace the stock parts with aftermarket parts for better result.

Strange Clutch Kit

One day, our image character Izmon the R2D2 + Doraemon hybrid was wondering around the facility.foot

He has spotted our warehouse / shipping manager T-shima laser printing a single clutch cover.
T-shima normally does it in a bulk, so knew something special about this clutch...eye

001

Just as Izmon suspected, it was a special order clutch sign01

013

Here's a housing + flywheel combo for the clutch.

Can you guess which vehicle this clutch is for?

If you guessed it correctly, then you should work for a clutch manufacturer.dollar

He had no idea what is it for...

It has such an unusual shape, and check out its back side:

021

He have asked Clutch-master Y for more details about this clutch and he showed us the OE clutch:

031

The OE clutch was attached to a ring-gear with pillars.

So Mr. Y has designed our clutch to fit the ring-gear as well.

BTW, the clutch he has built for this special order was R3A.

While he was obtaining as much information as possible from Mr. Y, Izmon was somehow forced to assemble it...shock

Izmon used to assemble clutch kits, so he had to recall the old days.

042

He was able to assembled it, and here's the finished product:

044

Here comes Mr. Y's professional inspection:coldsweats01

Mr. Y told Izmon he did a fine job, but Izmon witnessed Mr. Y secretly reassembling it later...sweat01

Time to dissect

We spent enough time at Nakayama circuit to understand how the stock 86 performs.

So now is the time to give it a special OS Giken made weapon to fight for the winning run sign01

Super Lock L.S.D.shine

First, we need to remove its differential carrier.

Toyota86_002

Removing the diff. carrier was pretty easy, and look how clean this thing is...

It made us hesitate to get dirty.sweat01

Anyhow, let's install the Super Lock LSD. wink

GReddy has tested it at the famous Laguna Seca for us already and it performed exactly as we hoped.
Now we just want to see and feel it ourselves.
We will report back here once we had a chance to go out to a circuit again. secret

Toyota86_003

While the 86 was up on the lift, we noticed a shadowy figure underneath the car...shadow

The shadowy figure was Mr. Y.sweat02

He was looking at its drivetrain, and was thinking how to tackle the clutch.

Hurry Mr. Y, 'cause we are planning to launch the clutch kit in August.

BTW, Super Lock LSD for FT86 / GT86 / FR-S is now on sale. smile

New material for clutch kit

We have spotted Mr. Clutch-master Y unloading some mysterious materials at our warehouse. danger

006_2

From far, it looked like some sort of gray plate,

But if you get closer...

009

It has changed its color and now you see the familiar surface pattern.

You all know what it is right?

005

Yes, it's a stack of carbon sheets.

We will cut out from these sheets to make the carbon clutch disks.

011

They are lighter than they look.

We need to cut them through a special processing, and grind / polish them to make them useful for our parts.

Here's a sneak peek of the finished product:

016

All new carbon clutch kit is currently in its final stage of development. new

019

We are testing the clutch kits for models from Nissan, Lotus, and BMW.

Our race-spec Toyota Vitz/Yaris is also equipped with A-type carbon clutch kit for testing.

So far so good good

You might see them in our product line-up sooner than you thinkshine

Circuit test

Time to test our 86! ...and Vitz.sun

We wanted to see how a stock 86 performs before installing OS Giken performance parts.

Some may say to do a proper break-in procedure before going all out, but not our Big-boss.

He simply wants to test our parts ASAP...

Toyota86005

This wasn't a planned test (well, not this soon) so we weren't sure if we could find a place to test at the last minute.
Good thing we had an Ex Moto-racer in OS Giken who could book a place with a single phone call.telephone

Since we are going to a circuit, we have decided to bring Vitz for some circuit product testing for our LSD and clutch.

Let's see how our Carbon clutch performs on track.

Toyota86006

We have arrived at Nakayama circuit at last.

Toyota86017

Complete the registration process,

and off we go to the track! run

Toyota86025

But WHAT THEannoy... it started to rain as we walked out side of the registration office rain

We were hoping we could test both vehicles in dry condition.  Who's a rain man here?pout

Anyhow, a little rain won't stop uspunch

First, we'll test 86:

Toyota86065

We had our own time attack competition among ourselves, but unfortunately, we all did better in our Vitz. sweat02

Keep in mind that our Vitz is modified for track use, and Nakayama circuit is a short track with many tight turns so naturally Vitz was better suited for the track.  Also, we couldn't turn off the VSC (vehicle stability control) on 86 for some reason.  We have followed the instruction on the user's manual, but it didn't completely deactivate the VSC.  Maybe there is a special technique to deactivate it completely like some of other Toyota vehicles...

Let us see how this will affect after installing our LSD.

Next up is the Vitz:

Toyota86035

Like we have mentioned, our Vitz is a race-ready spec even with a roll cage.  On top of that, it is equipped with Spec-X SuperLock LSD and the secret Carbon clutch kit.

This is a fun little car, and the Carbon clutch worked marvelously.shine
It has lighter pedal feel with easy clutch engagement/operation.

The SuperLock LSD also performed as expected from OS Giken.
Open differential on the street, 100% lock on the track when you need them.
(100% lock capable on the street as well, but please drive safely)

Toyota86060

We will come back to the circuit once our 86 is equipped with OS Giken parts.

Cannot wait.smile

Cosmetic surgery

On day two of our 86 arrival, we have decided to give it a quick make up.wink

We wanted something simple and subtle, so we have chosen Modellista body kits.
You can find them here at:http://www.modellista.co.jp/product/86/index.html

The newest member of OS Giken

Long-waited Toyota FT86 (Scion FR-S) is finally arrived to our office.scissors
BTW, the most dealers in Japan don't really carry any inventory for new cars.  Instead, they use built to order base system sort of like OS Giken... sweat02

1205033

We don't have any plan or goal for its modification yet.
But one thing for sure that it will have OS Giken LSD and Clutch kit shortly.
Who knows, we might even go as far as to make close ratio gear kit for it.smile

Don't you just love the new car smell?
Every part of the car is spotless and so clean that we felt uncomfortable touching it.coldsweats01

Brand new clutch for Vitz/Yaris

Let us share some info on a special clutch we have installed in our Vitz/Yaris.

Like I have mentioned before, our original plan was simply to test SuperLock LSD for Vitz/Yaris... but I guess Mr. RS asked Clutch-wizard at the last minute to make a new clutch while the transmission is removed.flair

We had no idea what type of clutch he was planning to make, but we knew he won't disappoint us.catface

Cimg0052

Here's the flywheel... well, it's a standard OS Giken flywheel and no light-weight version of any kind.
Don't worry, he won't disappoint us... we know he won't...sweat01

Cimg0053

Using a torque wrench to tighten the flywheel bolts with specified torque.

A word of advice:shine  when tightening the flywheel bolts, gradually tighten the bolts to reach specified torque instead of tighten them all at once.  Be patient.

Once the bolts are tightened correctly, it is time for a clutch disc...

Cimg0055

What the sign03

Isn't that a CARBON discsign02

We have been developing the carbon parts for many years, and now we finally found the right materials to meet our strict quality standard.  Soon you will be able to get your hands on our carbon clutch kits.

So stay tuned.good

Cimg0060

Anyhow, put the cover and we are finished.
Just look at the mysterious glow of the blue alumite cover...
It's a shame that we cannot look at it once the transmission is installed.weep

New LSD Oil??

Well, as we all know by now that our current LSD Oil "OS250R" is a well balanced and a long lasting oil, which we may not think we need another oil for our LSD's... except one person... Big Boss.danger

"As OS Giken, it is our duty / destiny to provide the best of the best" by Big Boss.

Here it is, our brand new LSD Oil:good

Unlike OS250R which was designed for Street and Circuit use, OS-GT01R was purely designed for circuit usesign01
Through 2 years of rigorous R&D and testing, we have finally found the best oil which Big Boss was satisfied with.
OS-GT01R has much better heat resistance and protect your LSD from heavy load and/or punishing driving condition.

It is possible that we were a bit too obsessed to find the right combination of oil, and we may have neglected to consider its cost...sweat01
As a result, MSRP is nowhere near the OS250Rcrying

Sigh... when will we ever learn...  shock

Please contact your nearest OS Giken distributors for details.

It's a play time... or so we thought

We have a Toyota Vitz/Yaris at our disposal for product testing, and Tommy and Mr. RS have decided to put it to a good use.scissors

Cimg0044

Both of them don't normally work on FWD vehicles, so it took them some time to take the car apart.sweat01
They originally planned to test our new LSD for Vitz/Yaris, but since they have already taken the car apart, they have decided to test our clutch kit as well.

Cimg0056

Before putting the car back together, they have found some parts needed to be replaced like this broken engine mount...
Cimg0058

This Vitz/Yaris had over 100,000 miles (mostly hard driven circuit miles) when it arrived to our office, so you could expect many things had to be replaced.dollar  Fortunately, we didn't need to replace any major parts.catface

Anyhow, now that they got the car on the road with a brand new LSD and a clutch, it is time for a long term road test!... but there's a little problem.danger

This car was built for circuit use and was not meant to be a daily driver.  So you could imagine that no one is willing to give up comfort of their own vehicles for the race ready car for their everyday commute.
Except one person... whose name is R2D2!  but unfortunately he could not fit in the bucket seat due to his unique figure/shape.coldsweats01
